Friuli Venezia Giulia Region

Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region located between the mountains and the sea on the Italian North-Eastern border. To this day it still preserves its original character of undisputable charm as a crossroads of people, cultures and history. The rural mountain scenario has much to offer: the traditional architecture of Sauris, an Alpine gem famous for its wine and food, and the breath-taking plateau of Lauco, all the way to Erto and Casso. The region’s medieval past emerges in the beautifully preserved villages of Strassoldo and Valvasone, in the wall that surrounds the fortress of Palmanova and the one of Venzone that was restored after the earthquake of 1976. Perched on the shores of the Natisone river, Cividale del Friuli, former capital of the Kingdom of Lombardy, offers a wealth of attractions, including the Aedicule, the national archaeological Museum and the Christian museum, now on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The journey continues in Aquileia, yet another UNESCO site and a former Patriarchal See: in the Patriarchal Basilica a wondrous archeological discovery unearthed the largest early Christian mosaic floor of the entire Western world. But there is also the Medieval Castle of Duino … Every town, every village of Friuli Venezia Giulia is well worth a visit!
